winautohide Tutorial: Enable, Configure, and Troubleshoot Auto-Hide Behavior
Overview
winautohide is a lightweight Windows utility that automatically hides the taskbar (and optionally other UI elements) when not in use, restoring it when the mouse moves to the screen edge or specific triggers occur. This tutorial shows how to enable and configure auto-hide, tweak behavior, and resolve common problems.
Before you start
- Compatibility: Works on modern Windows versions (Windows ⁄11).
- Download: Obtain winautohide from a trusted source (developer site or reputable download archive). Scan the file with your antivirus before running.
Installation & first run
- Download the ZIP or installer and extract/run it.
- If it’s a portable EXE, place it in a permanent folder (e.g., C:\Tools\winautohide).
- Run the program as a regular user; if changes require elevated privileges, run as Administrator.
Enable auto-hide
- Open winautohide.
- Check the box labeled Enable Auto-Hide (or similar).
- Confirm the taskbar hides after a short delay when the mouse leaves the screen edge.
Key configuration options
- Delay / Hide timeout: Adjust how long the taskbar stays visible before hiding. Set lower for snappier hides, higher if you need time to click.
- Reveal trigger: Choose whether the taskbar appears on mouse-over, on click, or via keyboard shortcut.
- Edge sensitivity: Fine-tune how close the cursor must be to the screen edge to reveal the taskbar.
- Excluded applications: Add apps that temporarily disable auto-hide (e.g., full-screen apps or presentations).
- Multi-monitor behavior: Configure which monitor(s) use auto-hide and per-monitor settings if supported.
- Start with Windows: Enable to run winautohide at login.
Advanced tweaks
- Use command-line switches (if available) to set options at launch or for scripting.
- Combine with window-management tools if you need automatic hiding for other UI components.
- For portable setups, create a scheduled task to run at logon if “Start with Windows” isn’t preferred.
Troubleshooting common issues
-
Taskbar won’t hide:
- Ensure no notification icons or apps are holding the taskbar active (check system tray apps).
- Restart Explorer: open Task Manager → restart Windows Explorer.
- Run winautohide as Administrator if system permissions block changes.
-
Taskbar flickers or repeatedly shows/hides:
- Increase hide delay and/or edge sensitivity.
- Disable conflicting utilities that modify the taskbar (custom shells, other auto-hide tools).
-
Auto-hide doesn’t work on specific monitor:
- Verify multi-monitor settings in winautohide and Windows Display settings.
- Update display drivers.
-
After Windows updates the behavior changed:
- Reapply settings in winautohide and restart the app.
- Check for an updated winautohide version compatible with the latest Windows build.
Quick checklist to fix most problems
- Restart winautohide.
